Biography

The Spill label is an ongoing project to facilitate leading-edge independent music. This has involved a wide range of activities including operating a studio, releasing records, doing mail-order, organizing shows and tours, and maintaining this web site.
History and activities
The label was started in the eighties by a loose group of Brisbane musicians as a way of keeping a permanent address for records sporadically released by ourselves and others. Since the early 90s the label has been run mainly by Greg Wadley. The first release produced by Spill itself was a compilation cassette of mostly Brisbane and Melbourne bands, produced in 1991. The second and third Spill compilations were released as cds in 1993 and 1995. These are available in mp3 format on the compilations page. As well as this series Greg has released theme compilations, and albums by bands. Recently Greg has been involved in producing the Melbourne Water compilation series.
At first the Spill "presence" consisted of photocopied mail-order catalogues placed inside record sleeves. We arrived on the web around 1994 - early for a music label - thanks to a well-timed postgrad stint and guidance from computer scientist Richard Hagen. Our first website was text-only, designed for access using Lynx. See the news archive for historical items going back to that time. Between 2004 and 2007 the site was graciously hosted by Graham Lee at W-Minc.
The Spill studio has carried out recording and mastering for a variety of bands and labels.
Greg occasionally fills in as announcer for the Two to the Valley show on Melbourne radio 3CR.
