Summers at the socket factory were brutal, but I had just turned 19
and saved up enough to buy a car. Pulling off the lot, I had only one
person in mind for the enger seat. I drove straight to the
Tastee-Freeze.

I tested both seats to make sure they’d recline, and again with my
eyes shut, practicing for dim light. At five minutes to close, I
unbuttoned my cardigan and ordered a waffle-cone, rocky-road. I said “I
got six cylinders and ten ways to love you.” She looked at me, she
looked at me once again, and she pulled down the metal shutter and
