Biography

Koen Holtkamp (b. 1978 NL) is an artist and composer based in Brooklyn, NY. Both in his music and sound works utilizing electronics, acoustic instrumentation and field recordings as well as with his work with light, color and vibration he has developed a unique approach that foregrounds simplicity, subtle details and gradual development. This acute sensibility is emphasized in his personal, playful way of interacting with how we engage with the senses.
Holtkamp has released several albums under his own name on labels such as Umor Rex, Thrill Jockey and Type as well as with Mountains, a duo project with Brendon Anderegg. He has toured extensively throughout North America and Europe performing at festivals such as Mutek Mx, Le Printemps de Septembre and The Decibel Festival and venues such as Cafe Oto, PS1, Roulette, The Douglas Hyde Gallery and Issue Project Room and has collaborated regularly with guitarist Chris Forsyth amongst others. He has also been included in several exhibitions, and workshops such as The Substrata Festival in Seattle, WA and Doug Aitken’s ‘Song 1′ installation at the Hirschhorn museum in Washington, DC.
Some of his current investigations include ‘Haptics’ a series of objects and installations focused on composing exclusively with inaudible ultra low frequency audio vibration and ‘Color Phase’ a series of stereo light installations that use simple everyday materials (light and paper) to hallucinatory effect.
In the fall of 2017 Holtkamp will debut a new audio / visual project titled 'Beast' with a pair of LPs on artist Matt Connors Pre-Echo Imprint.
